Winter Solstice Walk

Thursday, December 21, 2023 -
2:15pm to 4:30pm

Celebrate the shortest day of the year by walking at The Preserve State Forest, Old Saybrook, CT. Learn a bit about the sun's rotation and the seasons, too.

This moderately paced walk follows a 2.5-mile loop around The Preserve, ending at a special place just in time to watch the solstice sunset. The terrain alternates from smooth to rocky. Some trails are slippery due to wet leaves. Wear boots, bring a walking stick, and bring water. Rain or snow cancels.

Meet at 2:15 at the Ingham Hill Road parking lot in Old Saybrook, CT, across the street from
#231. Look for the State Forest sign on the right. We will depart the parking lot promptly at 2:30.

DIRECTIONS: Use GPS to navigate to the parking lot across the street from #231 Ingham Hill Road in Old Saybrook. (Not Essex!)  (Look for the state forest sign.)

OR, after arriving on Ingham Hill Road in Old Saybrook: From the Rt. 95 underpass on Ingham Hill Rd or southbound exit 67 on Rt 95, travel 1.7 miles N to the parking lot on the right. (Note: There is no corresponding northbound exit on 95.)
