Winter Colors, Part 2

Four more colorful sights seen during a 30-minute walk on a February day. In February, the sun is higher in the sky and plants really do start to come back to life. But these particular plants have more to offer the winter viewer than most.


Pussy Willow

On February 4, heath is in bloom in our coastal Connecticut town.

Pussy willow (Salix discolor), above, is right on schedule in late February. 

Red Twig Dogwood Yellow Twig Dogwood

Red twig dogwood (Cornus sericea) is a well-known standby for creating winter interest.

Not quite as well known as the red-twig variety, yellow twig dogwood (Cornus sericea 'Flavirimea') is unusual enough to cause people to slow their cars and point.
